The Creative Society: Building Nottingham’s Communities
Community Arts Evaluation Event Briefing
Aim
To demonstrate the contribution of arts projects in building social capital and growing community capacity in Nottingham. Nine community arts projects have undergone qualitative evaluations and will be demonstrating their work and their evaluations at this event.
What is the project about?
The cohesion and arts task group has developed evaluations and case
studies that aim to demonstrate the value of arts in building communities. The case studies are drawn from a wide range of ages and cultural backgrounds across the city:
• Dance 4 –Street Dance project – Sneinton residents working with Lone Twin to create performances as part of Dance 4’s international festival and to build neighbourhood links through on street workshops.
• Double Impact – Access to Arts – building a two-way relationship between vulnerable adults and the city’s cultural venues and events.
• Street Arts – involving local people and artists in participatory street arts through major events.
• Arts on Prescription – working with mental health service users to develop creative expression and build confidence.
• Artists in Exile – creative development projects with refugee and asylum seeking artists and local ‘host’ communities.
• Arts in Reach – brings arts activities to in-patient mental health wards to build confidence and aid recovery into mainstream community support.
• Nottingham Contemporary- photography engagement project with Nottingham families to promote creative family play and to introduce the Gallery’s mainstream community offer.
• Raw Collective - Art Car Boot, to support local artists in bringing their creativity to the wider community.
• Women’s Friendship Group – creative book project with asylum seekers and refugees, sharing their stories to build confidence and friendships.
Background
An arts and community cohesion task group; made up of representatives from the City Council, Arts Council, University of Nottingham, New Art Exchange, The Playhouse, Nottingham Contemporary, City Arts and Dance 4, has been working together to evaluate local arts projects and to document their contribution to building communities.
Outcomes and Launch Event
The project was largely funded by the Arts Council, and we are hosting an event on December 9th to launch the case studies and share best practice. The event will be an informal ‘market place’ drop in, a chance to participate in and see some of the work that Nottingham’s creative communities have produced.
The Creative Society; Building Nottingham’s Communities
Thursday 9th December @
Nottingham Contemporary, The Space
drop in anytime between 10–12 or 2 - 4pm
We are also putting together a pack for each delegate to include the written case study project reports that our University of Nottingham research team put together along with related information and statistics. This will also launch the online tools we have developed to help community groups conduct their own evaluations and write up case studies. The day will run in two halves, the morning session from 10am – 12pm, repeated again in the afternoon, 2pm – 4pm. Delegates are invited to drop in to either the morning or the afternoon session.
Why Attend?
This is an opportunity to celebrate the successes of Community Arts projects in Nottingham, and to demonstrate your commitment to them. The drop-in will give you a chance to talk to participants about how the projects have helped them and the difference they have made to their lives. This will help in making funding and commissioning decisions as well as deepening your understanding of the wider impact of Arts projects on Nottingham’s communities.
