On Sunday 30.08.09 Nottingham’s first free festival celebrating Polish and other cultures will take place on the Forest Recreation Ground.
The Polish Government has designated 2009 the year of promotion of Polish culture in the UK. Inspired by this the Nottingham based charity, The Signpost to Polish Success, decided to promote the culture of the new arrivals and celebrate diverse and cosmopolitan Nottingham by organising FESTIWAL 2009- A Community Festival with a Polish flavour.
There will be music, a sports zone, activities for children, stalls with Polish and other foods/products as well as boutique/artisan and information stalls.
FESTIWAL 2009 will attract people from across the East Midlands and attendance figures are expected to be in the thousands. FESTIWAL 2009 organisers, The Signpost to Polish Success, see the event as “a unique opportunity to bring together people from different cultures and age groups with the aim of promoting racial and generational harmony.”
The main stage will offer a variety of music with Polish and other Easter European origins:
Trebunie Tutki - highly acclaimed roots band from the Polish Tatra Mountains. They have worked closely with the Twinkle Brothers, a Jamaican Reggae band, producing 2 CDs: In Sherwood and The Songs of Glory. Dressed in traditional clothes at FESTIWAL 2009 they will perform traditional folk music with a modern twist and will also perform traditional dances;
Pinski Zoo – formed by Jan Kopinski, a British born and Nottingham based jazz musician of Polish origins. Jan Kopinski’s music is one of the ways he explores his Polish roots. Kopinski’s father flew bombers in Polish squadrons during World War II;
The Choir of St. Cecylia from the Polish Community in Nottingham - traditional Polish songs;
MuHa - New Roots from Eastern Europe based on Ukrainian and Russian folklore;
Aistaguca – Nottingham based band playing Balkan music;
Kacpersky – Northampton based band of young Polish new arrivals playing alternative rock.
In the sports zone the major attraction will be a special guest, Les³aw Æmikiewicz – a legend of Polish football, who played in a famous match in 1973 at Wembley, which saw the exit of the England’s squad from the World Cup in 1974, plus a rising star, a young Polish footballer, Rados³aw Majewski, who currently plays for Nottingham Forest.
The event will be compared by the Polish Radio presenter Pawe³ Sztompke from Poland’s Radio 1. He will be assisted by representatives of the Signpost to Polish Success.
The Festival has been funded and sponsored by Senat (the Higher Chamber of the Polish Parliament), Neighbourhood Development Company, Notts Community Foundation and One Nottingham, Nottingham City Council and others (see poster attached).
